I was in the bath today, singing (more like humming) along to feety's P.I.M.P when it suddenly dawned on me that i didnt know what happened to Jack and Jill after they came tumbling down the hill.

Maybe there was a second verse, but i can remember. I'm sure Jack wouldnt remember either... not after breaking "his crown". Must've been brain-dead or something.

And Jill, how stupid... did she have to do the same thing her brother ( i assume) did? Now what really ticks me off is ... what on earth were they doing up a hill in the first place? "To fetch a pail of water" was the reason... but that is the stupidest reason to go up a hill!!

Water flows downhill... you wouldnt find any on top of a hill. Well maybe if there is a well up there then fine. But if there WAS a well up there then how IRRESPONSIBLE are the people that sent them up there?!! Their parents? Someone call the child protection agencies.

Anyway.. so what happend after Jill stupidly thre herself downhill like her bro?

How about this for the second verse?

Call the ambulance to come an' pick up these two kids
Y'all need to carry they ass out
Do a hundred on the highway... but dont leave skids
Flash the lights and tae the road south
[yawwwwwwwwn... i'm tired you guys finish it in the comments]

brownAangel believes the second verse is (and I have it from an authentic source and I am credible since I O.D.ed on nursery Rhymes cos of my lil bro.):

Up JAck got
and home did trot
as fast as he could caper
he went to bed
to mend his head
with vinegar and brown Paper.

( now this version rhymes and goes to the music and the rhythm of the verses- not that I'm hating on yours, but yea good try good try. )

I hope by brown paper they're not referring to hemp!

As far as I am aware (and I may well be wrong here) there is no indication as to the age of Jack or Jill, so may be they were geriatrics... this would explain Jack's fall, not to mention his use of strange medicines (you know how old people often use TCP for every thing, well may be where they came from the tradition was to use ample supplies of brown paper. It wouldn't smell so bad and its probably more useful).

as i recall, there was this general assumtion [from the pictures in the books] that they were kids... and siblings.

Now since the rhyme doesnt emphatically say either of these two things..

we could argue that Jack and Jill could be two lovebirds in their mid-thirties trying to make nookie at the village well on a moonlit august night.

Another... argument could be that Jack is the shortened form of Jacklyn.

Yeah, you see, they tried to tell us about lesbians even before we left the pram.

Hey, you can trust my comments on this. I lived in a nursery school for a long long time. The second verse is as follows (whether fabricated or not I can't tell but I know that's how they sing it)

Jack and Jill went up a hill ...

("By the left, quick march.")

By the re,
by the ra,
by the re,
by the ra a a a a,
by the re,
by the ra,
And Jill came tumbling after.

I love to go
A-wandering
Along the mountain side,
And as I go,
I love to sing,
Ta la, la, la, la, la, lah. (forgotten this line)

By the re,
By the ra,....

How's that?

oooh... scandal!!! someone's gotta be wrong. iwonder who it is.

I can authenticate for lilboy.. albeit only the fact that he lived in a nursery school for a while, i cant say whether his second verse is right though.

brwonie? reveal your source?

I had to defend my exceedingly good name. First of all that "by the re" song is actually a popular song sang by girl scouts, Boy scouts , girl guides etc and it is:
Valerie Valdera (or some variation on this spelling)
My knapsack on my back ( the part he forgot and was unsure of).

Now my source is a British nursery rhyme casette and I must say they had lots of different rhymes like " there is a hole in my bucket Eliza", " They're changing guards at Buckingham palace", " me and my teddy bear", " I love little pussy", " All I want for christmas is my two front teeth".....

The list is endless. As someone with a little brother, I hobb nobbed with a lot of babies in my teenage years.
I babysat a lot and I was involved in a Nursery Rhyme or Childrens movie trafficking racket.
We would trade these tapes - much like you might have done nintendo games..... ooh it was glorious. It was an excellent way to meet the older brothers....

ahem ahem...
ok i'll be quiet now. :-x

howz that for authentication and for a Curricilum Vitae......

(See you made me bust out the good stuff.)

My question is: How on earth did you derive a thought on Jack and Jill from P.I.M.P?
Okay, so this wasn't the most creative answer, but I took a cue from dear Faf and googled the issue. This is taken from www.famousquotes.me.uk:

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.
Up got Jack, and home did trot As fast as he could caper
He went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper.

French (history) connection!
The roots of this child's nursery rhyme is in France and the Jack and Jill referred to are Louis XVI who was beheaded (lost his crown) followed by his Queen Marie Antoinette (who came tumbling after). The words and lyrics were made more palatable for the nursery by giving it a happy ending and has further been altered by the passage of time - the actual beheadings occurred in 1793. The first publication date for the lyrics of this nursery rhyme is 1795 which tie-in
with the history and origins

So Jack and Jill actually have some historical orgins. And BrownAngel was right. :)

who woulda thought there was so much more to that nursery rhyme.

Yeah about the connection between P.I.M.P and J&J... that's just me. Sometimes.... most times actually i think tangentially.

all this talk of Jack and Jill got me thinking of some old, lost nursery rhymes that I discovered in used book stores over the years. These are not available ANYWHERE else, and would probably get you a visit from child protection agencies if you read them to your kids today. At the very least, the kid would end up in the shrink's. I dug them out and put them on my webpage, www.appletreedrive.com. Click on the lost nursery rhymes link. Let me know what you think you guys :)
